Legal Marriage
Please note that this information is provided only as a general guideline and it is wise to do some research with your particular embassy / consulate before your arrival to find out exactly what documents are required.
Most embassy web sites have all the information you will need in regards to getting your marriage certified here in Thailand.
The following documents are required:
Original Birth certificate (for most nationalities)
Passport for proof of identity
Evidence of termination of any previous marriages (i.e. death certificate, divorce certificate)
Both parties must visit their country’s embassy / consulate in Thailand and fill out the appropriate documents.
These documents need to be translated by a certified translator and require being authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This could take from 3-5 days.
The procedure with the local Thai District Office is as follows for a legal wedding in Phuket:
Marriage registration can be filed at any District Office or Minor District Office nationwide regardless of the birth place of the couple
Once the marriage registration is completed, each party will be given a copy of the Marriage Certificate as evidence
Another option is for the couple to submit a request to the Registrar to register the marriage at any location under the supervision of that District Office
The following documents are required by the local District Office in Phuket:
A copy of both parties passports
The authenticated affirmation and the certified translation
The Thai wedding certificate then needs to be translated into your language and authorized by the Department of Consular Affairs within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that you finally can register your marriage in your country of residence.
We have contact details for a local translation bureau, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok and District Offices in Phuket.
